Sun Protection For Boat Trips

Boating in the summer is a great way to relax and enjoy yourself, but you do have to stay protected from the sun. Allowing your skin to burn can increase your chances of developing skin cancer, in addition to speeding up aging. Here are some tips on how you can protect yourself from the sun while you’re out on your boat.

1. Apply Sunscreen

A high-SPF, water-resistant sunscreen is a must for any boater. Apply your sunscreen 30 minutes before you head out into the sun to all exposed areas of skin, including the back of your neck, the tops of your feet, and your wrists and hands. Reapply sunscreen every 90 minutes to two hours or as directed by the bottle instructions. A high-SPF lip balm is also recommended.

2. Wear a Hat & Sunglasses

A good pair of UV-rated sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat are essentials for sun protection. Not only will these items protect your face from sunburn, but they’ll also give you necessary eye protection and help cut down on glare so that your visibility is improved.

3. Stay Covered

If you don’t have any form of shade on your boat like a cabin or T-top, you’ll have to wear clothing to protect your skin or carry an umbrella for shade. Light-colored natural fabrics like cotton or linen are best for hot-weather wear. Long sleeves and pants that are flowy enough can actually keep you cooler than a tank top and shorts since your skin isn’t exposed to the sun and it can’t heat up.
