Doing Our Part to Maintain and Improve Lake Life

Working, visiting, or living on Lake Michigan's “golden coast" means experiencing some of the most incredible sunsets. Whether on a boat, the beach, or looking out a window, you appreciate the magic of lake life, and we all have a role in protecting it.

How can we help? A big part is promoting clean, environmentally responsible practices. Reducing pollution, preserving fish and wildlife habitats, and protecting the Great Lakes' water quality all contribute to the long-term health of our environment and waterways.

Marinas can help by:

  • Reducing or eliminating releases of harmful substances.
  • Using environmentally friendly boat paints.
  • Choosing phosphate-free, biodegradable cleaning agents.
  • Avoid “topping off” gas to prevent spills.
  • Recycling and properly disposing of oils, paints, cleaners, and plastic winter covers.
  • Cleaning boats and trailers before transport to prevent the spread of invasive species.

“We recently completed our recertification as a Michigan Clean Marina,” said Matt VanDam, General Manager of Gull Lake Marine-South Haven. “I walked our reviewing agent around our properties, and we discussed the latest options available for containment and recycling. I already restocked supplies for this summer!”

What does this mean for boaters and travelers? You can do your part by reducing waste and choosing marinas committed to sustainability. Enjoy clean, well-lit restrooms, grassy areas, pump-out stations, recycling bins, and pet-friendly zones - amenities that make your time on the water cleaner and more enjoyable.

“We are a boat dealership and part of the South Haven community,” Matt added. “We love it when our customers come in and tell us their family stories of when they were young and what the area was like. Gull Lake Marine employees are passionate anglers who teach their children about fishing, boating, and eco-friendly practices. We choose to do our part to help make new memories.”
