Cold-Weather Boating Tips

Now that the weather has turned chilly here in Michigan, many intrepid boaters are eager to get out on the water for hunting and winter recreation. However, due to the extremely cold temperatures and risk of inclement weather, it’s important to know how to prepare yourself and your boat for going out on the water in the cold. Here are some of our tips.

Layer Up

Dressing in layers can be a great way to stay warm and cozy in the cold. You can always add or remove layers as needed. Start with a base of thermal underwear, then add lightweight leggings and long-sleeved shirts before you put on jeans or cargo pants and a sweater. You can then put your standard coat on top of this. Carry some extra layers in your boat with you. Don’t forget about your extremities: thick socks under waterproof boots and insulated fingerless gloves, along with a scarf and a knit hat, will help you stay warm all over.

Stay Fed & Hydrated

Keep a thermos of hot tea or coffee with you, along with some water and snacks, so that you can stay hydrated and sated. Shivering and being cold will burn more calories, and being dehydrated doesn’t help you at all in the cold.

Check the Forecast

It’s a smart idea to check the local forecast for the area you intend to boat in before you head out. Knowing what to expect can help you strategize. For example, it might be clear during the morning, then snowy in the afternoon, so you’ll want to pack up and head to shore around lunchtime. Also, if you notice that the forecast is going to be particularly severe, with high winds or very cold temperatures, you’ll need to make the call as to whether it’s safe to go out at all.

Keep Your Boat Maintained

Finally, it’s important to make sure that your boat is always in good working order before you go out on the water. This becomes especially crucial during the wintertime when fluids can freeze up or become gummy and moving parts can become stiff.
